Umesh Masharani, MD

Dr. Masharani earned his bachelor's degree in physiological sciences at the University of Oxford. He earned his medical degree at Middlesex Health in London. He completed his fellowship in Endocrinology at UCSF.

He is the clinical chief of the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism at UCSF. He sees patients with diabetes and thyroid disorders. He also has an endocrine faculty practice. His clinical research interests are in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. He has been a co-investigator on several NIH funded studies with Dr. Lawrence Fisher, Professor of Family Medicine, UCSF, investigating affective disorders in diabetes. He is a member of the islet transplant group and has participated on several allo-islet transplant studies in type 1 diabetes. There is a very active auto-islet transplant program at UCSF and Dr. Masharani assesses patients before their transplant and manage their insulin treatment posttransplant. He has an interest on the biology of insulin resistance.
